What is a Propane gas sensor?

Propane gas sensor is mainly used for propane gas (C3H8) detection, generally based on semiconductor or catalytic combustion principle. Propane is the main component of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which can be used as a fuel. Due to its high calorific value, no soot, no carbon residue, and ease of operation and use, it has been widely introduced into the field of people’s lives. Propane is a colorless and odorless gas, slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, and ether, with flammable and explosive properties, the leakage of propane and liquefied petroleum gas also has great harm to human beings, and Propane gas sensors can effectively detect the propane gas and liquefied petroleum gas, and play a great preventive role.

Working Principle

1. Semiconductor Propane Sensor

Propane gas sensor generally has semiconductor type and catalytic combustion types. The semiconductor propane sensor uses tin oxide, which has a low conductivity in clean air, as the gas-sensitive material. In clean air, the oxygen adsorbed on the surface of the tin oxide will bind the electrons in the tin oxide, resulting in a state where it is difficult for the electrons to flow. In a leaking gas (reducing gas) environment, the oxygen on the surface reacts with the reducing gas and disappears, and the electrons in the tin oxide regain their freedom, by which the electrons flow freely. The conductivity of the sensor increases with the concentration of combustible gases in the air. The change in conductivity can be converted into an output signal corresponding to the concentration of that gas using a simple circuit.

2. Catalytic Combustion

Catalytic combustion type propane sensor works according to the principle of catalytic combustion effect, by the detection element and compensation element paired composition of the bridge arm, when encountered with flammable gas detection element resistance rises, the bridge output voltage changes, the voltage change with the gas concentration increases into a proportional increase, compensation element to play a parametric and temperature and humidity compensation role.
